Gut Check: What If Scenario #2

What If, is a game we have all played from time to time with surprising results. These two words have the power to challenge our self-image or reaffirm it. These two words can test the boundaries of friendships or end them. What If, are two words that acquiesce to no one's control.

What If:

You and a small group of friends head toward the mall parking lot after a fun day of hanging-out. The day as a whole has been exceptionally blissful. It began with a late start as you and your partner decide to toss the alarm clock out of the room and enjoy the bed and each other for another few hours.

Rising too late in the day for breakfast, and pressed for time to run a few important errands, you decide to kill a flock with one stone and head over to your favorite mall. Several returned calls later; a few friends agree to meet you and your partner later for a movie and drinks.

For once, a flick lived up to its billing, which leads to several rounds of critiques and drinks among you and your friends. A few hours later, your small group rounds the corner and cannot believe what you observe once in sight of the parking lot.

A young woman, who eerily resembles your mother, lies on the ground. Her hair and clothes are disheveled, thin lines of blood snail across her forehead and drip to the ground. She is non-responsive. Squaring off on both sides of the woman, are two groups of young men, each of equal number. One group is of brown-skinned youths, the other of white.

A violent fight breaks out; a few of the young men run out the rear exit of the lot, pursued by members of the opposite group. A member from each group, though badly bruised and scraped, remains with the woman.

It is clear to everyone that one group assaulted the unconscious woman, and the other group was determined to assist the victim and detain the assailants until help arrived.

Your partner pulls out a cell phone and begins to call 911 to report the incident.

The police dispatcher has sent an ambulance and several squad cars to the scene; the dispatcher asks if you can describe at least one of the assailants.
